Perhaps I should have mentioned Buddhism, for some varieties are very helpful on The Beyond - e.g. The Tibetan Book of the Dead. In Tibetan thought, Delogs are people who have "crossed the threshold of death and returned to tell about it" (I'm quoting from the back cover of 'Delog, Journey to Realms Beyond Death' by Delog Dawa Drolma - a volume recommended by Deepak Chopra in the bibiography of one his books). Trouble is, Tibetan thought is not Western thought, so it's more difficult to get the feel of their metaphors. Nonetheless, it can be very helpful, in a cross-cultural sort of way...
